Tuesday August 21 2007

Walked early, then went back to bed for an hour. Jonathan Trebing came over and we worked on a song idea he had: “Never Let Me Go” and I made egg salad sandwiches for lunch. We pretty much finished it, then I went to Troy’s building, and we wrote “Magic Hour” and I’m really happy with the way that song came out. We have 4 songs for the Ukulele record now, and we figure we can start recording in mid-October. Went to Taproom with Troy after we finished and had a few beers. Gave him Casino Royale to watch and hit the hay.

Monday August 20 2007

Walked early and this drought continues. Jessica Maros came over to write, and we got a cool groove going, but I was having problems with Reason, so we decided to go to Chinatown for lunch. We saw Chris and Amy Lindsey there, and she said she’s having her baby tomorrow. Go back home and tried to get back to work but the Chinese made me feel tired, so I had to take a nap. Never in the middle of the day again. Got back together with Jess at 4, and we worked til 7 and finished a song: “This is the Life”, and it came out pretty cool. They were going to 8 off 8th, but I called Carl and Karl, and they came over and cooked pasta, and we rented “Casino Royale” which they had never seen. It was fun to watch it again, and I picked up more stuff, like, I know who Mr. White is now, etc. To bed pretty early.

Sunday August 19 2007

Walked early and went back to bed. Volleyball was on TV and I had weird dreams with that as the soundtrack. Melissa came over and we drank iced coffee, then we picked up Katherine and went to El Mariachi and I had 3 beers and lunch fajitas ($24). Melissa took me home and went to work, and I went to Troy’s studio and helped him build a table for his studio. It was fun, kind of like building a model. We went to Red Door West for a beer when we got the thing done, and there were these absolutely obnoxious biker guys yelling disparaging things and taunting Posh (who was in the car). I mean, what are these guys problems? I certainly wasn’t interested in starting a fight with one, let alone 11 bikers, but still. They annoyed me not a little. So it was a quick beer, and then home and Liz’s friend Ryan came over and Liz made turkey burgers and we watched an episode of Big Love, which was fun. Angelo rode by on his scooter and told me about his pixel-cam. He said he’s been taking a lot of pictures with his Diana lately. He said he needed a 3rd person for a co-write on Friday, but I told him I couldn’t do it because I’ll be with my gran. To bed at 11.

Saturday August 18 2007

Walked early and Liz came. Then tidied up a bit because mom and dad were coming back. Got the vegetables from the farmer, and then, about 10, Grimey and Mindy called, and they wanted to walk Mooch. I didn’t want to discourage them from walking, even though I didn’t want to go, so we walked to the library, and it was so hot and gross. Mooch stayed in the back yard, and we all went to Chinatown. Then, home, and took it easy. To the pet store for dog food, Frontline, etc. ($120) and then collected all my stuff and moved back in at my house. Answered some emails, then Liz had a Yoga class, which I took, and it was great. I want to start doing more Yoga. I had this revelation that it’s very much like the drums: you have to find a sort of focal point, and concentrate, and almost not let yourself drift. Made dinner, Migas, and Rachel Husenstamm came over, and we watched a few episodes of Big Love, and it was so good I had to go back to Blockbuster and get the next installment. Made myself a “Cape Cod” Bed at 11:30

Friday August 17 2007

Walked early with the dogs by myself, and I took my ipod. Home, and decided to make Vichyssoise, so to Harris Teeter with Gran, and we got the leeks and stuff. Made the soup, and took a jar of it down to Bob and Lynn’s. Carl and Karl came over for lunch, and we made plans to have dinner together. Liz called, and said she also wanted to come. Watched more Sherlock, and took like 4 naps.  It’s so hot, it’s just horrendous. I hate this drought. All the wild animals and plants are so dehydrated it just depresses the crap out of me. But I have to endure. I just feel like it’s not fair that I can stay cool inside and get a drink of water whenever I want to, and the birds and squirrels and deer all have to suffer. It’s humans who have been accelerating these problems! I guess i’m kind of an environmentalist. An environmentalist who (laughs) drives a Cadillac! Liz and Karl and Carl came for dinner, and we had a big salad, and Liz gave us a power point lecture about women’s body images through the ages, and like how it was fashionable for women to be more voluptuous in certain times, and how now, with like Kate Moss, it’s in style for a woman to be super-skinny with no breasts. I wonder why that is. She says it’s to keep women oppressed. Watched some of “Weeds” and went to bed.

Thursday August 16 2007

Moved over to Hopkins to house-sit. Took Posh’s bed, dog biscuits and my ipod, the G. Gatsby, and some shoes and settled in the guest room. Took my grandma to Shintomi for lunch, and she was saying “What nationality is this?” and I would say “Japanese, Gran.” like, eleven times. But we had fun, then we went to the store and Jason Lehning came over, and we finished the song “The Most Dangerous Game” I invited him to stay for dinner but he said he had to get ready cause he was leaving town to go record a band in Ohio. Thad called and said he had pitched our song to Little Big Town through somebody that knows them or something. He’s out there pitching, which is awesome. I made Gran and I salads for dinner, and we watched : “Murder Rooms: The Dark History of Sherlock Holmes” with Ian Richardson, and it was very entertaining. To bed pretty early.

Wednesday August 15 2007

Walked the dogs, and Thad Cockrall came over, and we made a demo of “The Chance”, which came out really good, and I think it could be a huge hit. He’s a really nice guy, Thad. He has a great range to his voice. It’s strange writing this commercial country type of stuff, but there’s something fun about it. I really love what Mutt Lange has done in country music, with Shania Twain, and all those wonderful background vocals. Made dinner, and Kathrine and Melissa came over, and John Deaderick, and we were writing this song about “Sushi on a Sunday Night” and it was funny. Liz showed up, and she had to get up early, so we wrapped it up.

Tuesday August 14 2007

Walked early, and Kate York came over, and we wrote a cool song: “Give it Away”, and I made lunch for us. Italian sausage and salad and navy beans. We were going to put a demo down, but there wasn’t enough time, so we quit. To Hopkins with Posh, then down to Troy’s building to work on the ukulele stuff, and this week, we finished “Pay No Attention to Me”, and it came out very cool. Brett James came in and talked to us for a minute, then he said: “I’ll be right back.” and he comes in a second later with this huge 38 pistol, both Troy and I are like “whoa!” And he’s brandishing the thing this way and that saying “Heh heh. Used to be my grandfather’s” and then finally, what we most wanted to hear: “There’s no bullets in it.” He’s funny. But it sure does make a statement when somebody walks into a room with a gun. After we finished our song, we went to Red Door for a beer,  and I saw Audley Freed, and he came up and ordered a drink right next to us, but he didn’t say hello. He’s kind of shy, I guess. Home and changed shirts and down to Mercy Lounge to play a couple songs for Samantha Gibb’s movie and I was nervous because I’d never played them before. Talked to Angelo and Eulene and David Preston was there, and he was telling this hilarious story about hitchhiking and getting picked up by the cops, and it was amazing, I wanted to record it. He said he would take me out to lunch and I could bring my recorder, and he would tell it again. I was really relieved once I had performed my songs, and there were a lot of people there, but I had to go to the basement to see Vic Thrill, and Ryan Smith was there, and lots of other people. My brother and Karl came, and it was fun to see him again. He’s really an exciting performer. Home and in bed by 11:45
