The Remains at Mercy Lounge

Well I have stupid allergies making me sleepy and stuffed up. I am taking all the medicine and what not but it doesn’t seem to do anything. Yesterday, L and I went to Home Depot and got new filters for the air intakes. Then the Remains came over. They were in town and played at the closing ceremonies of the Nashville Film Festival! They were so good. The sound in the Cannery was the best i’ve ever heard it. And I think this could be partially attributed to the fact that they didn’t play too loud. Anyway, it was a great moment of pride in my dad, and all my friends and so forth, being there to see them play. It was really a special night. Tidied up the house a bit. Wanted to work on something, or at least get back to working out in the gym, but i’m just too spaced out to do that. Been reading Toole’s “Dunces” and it’s so funny. Carl came over last night and we made Mexican doughnuts: “Churros” – I was having fun thinking of puns on the word “Churro”; like “Baby Churro ‘l I need!” and “Churr-on Churro-own” and it was just getting silly and I was the only one laughing. I watched several episodes of 30-rock when I was feeling incapacitated and damn that show is funny. Then I watched “Kitchen Nightmares: Gordon Returns!” and that was really entertaining. Got some wonderful new applications for the iphone, including one called “Euphonics” and it’s really great. It’s more customizable than “Bloom” although it doesn’t have the random setting, which is nice. Miserable with these stupid allergies and can’t make myself feel better.
From the forthcoming Silver Seas album “Home and Dry”, only for the readers of the blog, I present:
For your listening (i hope) pleasure.
Cheers,
DT
Well I couldn’t sleep the other night because I still had lots of consolidating to do on the SS record. So I went out to the studio at 1 am, and stayed out there til it was all done. Printing effects and making sure stuff transferred properly. Anyway. Then I emailed JJ and told him I could drop off the drives so we’re in mix world. I’ve been working with Brad Jones with an artist called Rosie Thomas from Seattle. We had fun and did some charming songs and I played bass and guitar and vibes. Got an email from Josh Rouse saying he couldn’t come to the wedding, but enclosing some pics of his son, Oliver. Cute kid. You could tell he’s a bit of an outlaw from the photos, too. That little outlaw look in his eyes. But anyway, things have been busy. And I fight that nagging sensation that something is right at the edges of my consciousness that i’ve forgotten. I’m sure it’s more like 3 things. So I found some random CDs and there’s a few old demos on them, so maybe I will send some of them to the blog. I need to spruce up the mp3′s bad! I am going to add the Madi Diaz demo. Today I went to Troy’s studio and got the files for the ukulele record. I want to re-do the vocals. I was trying to sound like Chet Baker, but the problem is I wound up sounding like Chet Baker!
Well I’ve been a bachelor for a few days- L. to New York, celebrating being a bachelorette with her chums up there. The first day I went to Indian with John Deaderick, and that made my pyloric valve flare up. Then went to the studio and did a little song for this movie called “The Desert World”. I posted it under the mp3s. It’s kind of cheesy but what the hell. Then I went to Justin and Ian’s studio and they were working with Jeremy Lister, and so it was cool to stop by, and while I was there, Trent and Kristen Dabbs dropped in. We all sort of sat outside by the fire shooting the bull, and passing around a bottle of Cinnamon liquor called “Fireball”- it sort of tasted like the candy of the same name, as Ian observed. We had fun, then I went home. Brad Jones called and I am going to do a couple sessions for him this weekend. I’m happy to have been invited and also, to play some keyboards. I think if I took one piano lesson a week for 5 months and practiced 45 minutes a day, I would get quite good! I also want to take a watercolor class at Cheekwood. So that’s my plan for my hobbies: Piano lessons and watercolor class. Now I just need the money for that. Maybe I can convince Gran to loan it to me, to be repaid, of course, after my first opening. John Deaderick left a message about riding bikes and all day long I thought it was Sunday, but there it is. To dinner with the Barrons and we had hamburgers and red wine and it was sort of carnivorous. Home and read some recording magazines and went to bed.
Well we had a fun trip to Chicago. We had fun doing the museums and I stood in front of Hopper’s “Nighthawks” for a long time. Supposed to be about isolation within marriage. Then we tried a great restaurant called “Hot Chocolate” and it was famous for it’s name so we tried some Mexican H.C. and it was really great. Discovered LaVazza coffee. Excellent. We walked around the old windy city quite a bit and I think I found a suit at Kenneth Cole. We had fun just getting out of town for a couple days. But now it feels good to be home, and it’s top of the week so I made a list of all the things I need to do, and they include getting my finances organized. Also I need to make a vision-board thingy. Robbie Harrington called and I accidently deleted the number and i’m sure he’s wondering why I haven’t called him back. Heard some of Mindy Smith’s new record and it’s amazing. I think it’s possibly her best one yet.
Well we went to see “Ten out of Tenn” last night. They were very good and you could tell it was the end of the tour and they were all in very good shape. Kevin Rhoads is a great bass player. So, of course, is Butterfly Boucher. They were like a giant Fleetwood Mac. Will Sales is quite an excellent drummer. He hit that drum fill on Butterly’s “Gun For A Tongue” just perfectly. And Trent Dabbs is such a good singer! A great show. I found myself wishing the seas had a date on the books. Have to do something about that. Saw Hillary Lindsey. She thinks she’s not cool enough to write with me. I think that’s hilarious, but totally untrue. Saw Nick Buda and Lauren Lucas and they are so nice. Also saw Neilsen Hubbard and talked to Keith Cose. Home and half-packed and L. and I got to Chicago in the morning. Went to bed thinking about Queen. We are the Champions.
