Ten Tips For Organizing
By Holly Tashian
Being organized allows you to get your work done efficiently
and gives
you more time to do things that enhance your life.
-
Get rid of excess clutter. Clutter equals delay. See Ten
Tips for Getting Rid of Excess Clutter.
-
Give every item in your home or office a place where it
belongs.
Store similar items together such as all cleaning supplies on one
shelf.
Keep only what you need and use. Put everything back in its place when
you are finished using it.
-
Maintain a clear desk. Use files to store papers not
currently being
used. Arrange your files alphabetically or chronologically and keep
them
current. Sort mail when it arrives and handle it once. Pay bills at
least
twice a month.
-
Make a list each day of what you want to get accomplished.
Prioritize
the list from most important to least important. Do the most important
task first.
-
Write all your notes in one notebook. Carry a
loose-leaf personal
notebook with you at all times, write down shopping lists, telephone
messages,
to do lists, meeting notes, random ideas, expenses, etc. As you do
something
on your list, check it off and keep bringing information forward. Get
rid
of post-its.
-
Do it now! Procrastination results in a backlog of
undone tasks
that can become overwhelming. Set aside a day or two to catch up on the
backlog.
-
Plan ahead for big projects. Large jobs, like painting
a room, require
many steps. Make a list of all the steps involved, the equipment
needed,
and do the big job in small segments.
-
Delegate jobs to others according to their skills.
You don’t
always need to do all the work by yourself.
-
Take a 10 minute break every hour during concentrated work.
Stretch,
walk, rest, drink water, close your eyes and get away for a few minutes.
-
Reward yourself. If you finish a job early, or
complete a difficult
task, reward yourself with something that you love – a meal in a
wonderful
restaurant, a trip to the museum, a hot bath, a walk in the woods, a
massage.
